Supporting Greatness. Developing Opportunities.

ECG’s Distribution Line Design Certification Program provides essential training for field engineering personnel.
Presented in a step process beginning with Level I for designers with less than three years of line design experience. Upon successful completion of Level 1, Levels 2 & 3 are offered to provide further detailed procedures and techniques.

The Level 1 training is intended for those individuals that have less than three (3) years of distribution line
design experience or for those who are looking to refresh their knowledge of basic line design.

The Level 2 training is intended for those individuals that have successfully completed level I training and
have three or more (3+) years of distribution line design experience.

The use of concrete and steel poles is addressed in Level 3 along with a study of three-phase transformer banks.

Level 1

Covers the fundamentals of distribution line design. Participants design a single-phase overhead pole line that teaches about RUS assemblies, clearances, sag tables, guy tensions, and transformer loading. An overview of the National Electrical Safety Code is covered during the training along with a discussion about legal liability.

This course includes hands-on experience in the classroom and in the field. The skills and knowledge learned during the course are
essential for those who design and maintain distribution power lines.

  • Overhead Distribution Line Design
  • NESC Overview
  • Staking Tools
  • Class Design Project
  • Conductor Sag and Tension
  • Clearance Calculations
  • Transformer Loading
  • Design Project
  • Framing Assembly Overview
  • Framing Assembly Angle
  • Loading Pole Height calculations
  • Guy Loading Calculations
  • Legal Liability
  • Software Tools
  • Field Tools
  • Field Work

Level 2

Following Level I and on-the-job experience, Participants design a three-phase overhead pole line that encompasses learning about RUS three-phase assemblies, clearances, pole classing, guy tensions, and secondary voltage drop.
Additional content from the National Electrical Safety Code is covered during the training along with a discussion about legal liability.

  • Level I Review
  • NESC Overview
  • Conductor Sag and Tension
  • NESC Clearances
  • Pole Height Calculations
  • 3-Phase Line Design Project
  • NESC Strength and Loading
  • Pole Loading – Tangent pole
  • Three Phase Framing Assemblies
  • Three Phase Guying
  • 3-Phase Line Design Project
  • Joint Use Attachments /Audits
  • Transformer Loading

Level 3

After successfully completing Levels I & II, Level III training offers students an opportunity to put their line design knowledge to use. Students will design a double circuit pole line that crosses an interstate, intersects an existing high voltage transmission line, and has taps that cross a state highway.

The students will spend time in the field surveying, recording notes, and staking the proposed pole line. In the classroom, the students will complete the crossing permits along with calculating required pole heights, guy tensions, lead lengths, pole classes, etc.

  • Level II Review
  • Conductor Blow Out Inclined Span
  • Conductor Uplift
  • Interstate Crossing Field Work
  • Interstate Crossing Class Work
  • Concrete and Metal
  • Distribution Poles Selection
  • Transmission Crossing Field Work
  • Transmission Crossing Class Work
  • Three Phase Transformer Banks
